Is PFAS in Your Tap Water?

Culligan of Cleveland’s Whole-Home & RO is tested & certified to NSF/ANSI 53 to reduce Total PFAS, all 7 compounds in the standard, in Northeast Ohio’s water.

What is PFAS?

PFAS are essentially undetectable to human senses. No color, no smell, no taste — nothing that changes on the day they show up, and nothing that changes on the day they don’t. Your water looks exactly the same either way.

That’s not a small group of chemicals, either. “PFAS” refers to a family of nearly 15,000 compounds.

And they’re widespread: USGS research found at least 45% of American tap water contains one or more types of PFAS.

Because Fridge, Pitcher, & Faucet Filters Are Not Enough for PFAS...

And the Usual Fixes Don’t Settle It:

  • Boiling. It works for certain germs and toxins, but not for these. PFAS resist heat by design, that’s what they were built to do. Boiling doesn’t remove them, and as water evaporates they can actually become more concentrated. You can end up working against yourself.
  • Bottled water. Studies have found PFAS in bottled water too. Many bottlers draw from the same surface and groundwater sources as the public system.
  • The pitcher in your fridge. Most pitcher, refrigerator, and faucet filters aren’t certified for PFAS reduction. Many use lower-grade carbon media designed for taste and odor, not for forever chemicals. If yours isn’t certified for PFAS, you don’t know whether it’s doing anything about them.
  • A water softener. Softeners are built to reduce hardness minerals. They aren’t effective against PFAS or other chemical contaminants. A softener is the right tool for a different job.

What "Total PFAS" actually covers

NSF/ANSI Standard 53 tests systems against seven PFAS compounds: PFBS, PFDA, PFHpA, PFHxS, PFNA, PFOA and PFOS. An independent lab challenges the system with a known concentration, measures what comes through, and the manufacturer is retested on an ongoing basis to keep the listing.

Not all reverse osmosis systems are certified for PFAS. Look for certification to NSF/ANSI 53 for Total PFAS reduction from NSF International, the Water Quality Association, or IAPMO.
